Our Story

A family project on a quiet beach.

We came to Lombok for the surf. We stayed because no one was building what we wanted to come back to.

Wave Lombok is a small family project on the south coast of Lombok, Indonesia. Two beachfront villas, side by side, on a 2,000 sqm plot that we bought in 2014 and built out between 2020 and 2022. The villas are run day-to-day by Salwa, our manager — born and raised in the Serangan area itself, warm and welcoming with guests, and exacting on detail with the team. Together with a permanent team of ten, all hired from Lombok, she looks after every stay. No resort management company, no franchise, no shareholders.

We're a small family — two parents and two children who have been to the villas more times than we can count. We first came to Lombok in 2013, fell for the south coast, and have been refining what we built here ever since.

Why South Lombok

When we first walked the beach in 2014, there was nothing here. No road, no power, no other villas in sight. Just a long strip of sand, a coral reef offshore, and a surf break a few hundred metres east. We fell for the beach and the calm — but also for the warmth of the Sasak people we met along the way and the depth of the culture we found here. That is what made us stay.

The decision to build was a bet that South Lombok would grow slowly, quietly, and remain less crowded than Bali. So far that bet has been right. Lombok International Airport now handles 2.4 million passengers a year, Mandalika hosts MotoGP every October, and new restaurants and small hotels open in Kuta every season. And yet the beach in front of our villas is still empty most mornings — that part hasn't changed.

Architecture

Designed by ALT, in concrete and teak.

Both villas were designed by ALT Architects in their ALT-254 architectural language: off-form exposed concrete walls, deep overhangs that keep the interiors cool, full-height pivot doors, and andesite stone feature walls.

Materials are local where they could be — Lombok stone, recycled teak, polished concrete floors. The villas are solar-powered and water comes from on-site filtration. We've kept refining the details every year since.

What Matters to Us

Three things, in order.

1. Privacy

Each villa is a self-contained retreat. No shared lobby, no shared pool, no other guests to bump into. When you book Wave Lombok, you book a villa — not a room.

2. Family

We designed the villas for families and small groups. Shallow children's section in every pool. Bunk room. Cot, high chair, and baby gates available. Beach a sand path away. Restaurants within walking distance for the nights you don't want to drive.

3. Authenticity

Our team is hired from Lombok — that was the choice from day one. Our partners — surf instructors, drivers, therapists — are people we've worked with since the villas opened.
