Wave Lombok
South Lombok coast at sunset — quiet beachfront base for Mandalika MotoGP weekend

Lombok · MotoGP

Mandalika MotoGP from a quieter base.

35 minutes from the circuit, an empty beach to come home to. The smart booking for race weekend.

The Indonesian MotoGP at the Mandalika International Street Circuit is the biggest weekend on Lombok's calendar each October. Hotels in Kuta and Mandalika sell out months ahead, rates double or triple, and the area gets loud through the night. Wave Lombok offers the opposite — a beachfront villa 35 minutes west of the circuit, where you return to a quiet pool and an empty beach after the noise of race day.

You attend every session you want. You just sleep somewhere calm. And our rates do not spike for race weekend — we hold inventory direct rather than yield-pricing peak events.

Below is the practical guide: how far the circuit really is, how to plan the transport, what to bring on race day, and how Wave Lombok works for MotoGP-weekend guests.

The circuit

Mandalika International Street Circuit.

The Mandalika circuit opened in 2021 and held its first MotoGP race in 2022. It is a 4.3 km street-style track on the south coast of Lombok, in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone — a government-led tourism development next to Kuta Lombok. The track has 17 corners and a notoriously punishing track surface that has caused tyre and resurfacing dramas in past seasons.

The weekend runs Friday (free practice), Saturday (qualifying + sprint race), and Sunday (main race + supporting categories). Most travelers come for the full three days; a smaller number come just for Sunday. Tickets are sold via the official Mandalika circuit website and a handful of authorised resellers — buy them direct, never from street touts on race weekend.

The atmosphere is what makes the weekend. Mandalika is one of the newest stops on the calendar and the local crowd is enthusiastic — Indonesian flags, banners, full grandstands, vendors everywhere. Compared with European MotoGP weekends (Mugello, Assen), Mandalika is hotter, louder, younger, and more local. Worth experiencing at least once if you follow the sport.

Why a quieter base

Kuta during MotoGP weekend.

Kuta Lombok is the natural place to stay if you are going to MotoGP — it is two minutes from the circuit entrance, walking distance to many of the supporting events, and the closest to where the action is. But that proximity comes with trade-offs. Rates at the better Kuta hotels spike 2–3× their normal levels. Many sell out 6–9 months ahead. Restaurants are full, streets are crowded, motorcycles and music run late.

The alternative we offer is this: stay 35 minutes west, on a quiet beach, in a private villa with a private pool. Drive to the circuit early in the morning, watch the sessions you want, drive back. Our beach is empty no matter what is happening in Mandalika. Sunday afternoon, after the race, you sit by the pool while the post-race traffic dissolves.

For travelers who want race weekend without the chaos, this is the smart booking. For travelers who want full immersion — including post-race bars and late-night vibes — Kuta is still the right choice. Both are defensible.

How we make it work

Race-day logistics from the villa.

Transport. We arrange a private car-and-driver for race weekend. The driver knows the back roads, the parking arrangements, and the time to leave to beat the worst of the traffic. Cost is IDR 1.2–1.8 million per day (about USD $75–110) depending on car size. Book at least 2 weeks ahead — drivers are fully booked closer to the weekend.

Timing. We typically suggest leaving the villa by 8 AM for an early-afternoon race session, and 6:30–7 AM on Sunday for the main race. Race-day traffic on the south-coast road means expect delays on the normal 35-minute drive, then crawl on the final approach to the circuit. Plan generously, and bring snacks for the car.

Tickets. Buy directly via the official Mandalika circuit website. Grandstand tickets are more comfortable than the cheaper general-admission zones; some grandstands have better access to the paddock side of the track. Print or screenshot your tickets, and bring ID.

After the race. Stay in your seat for the podium and the cool-down lap — the immediate post-race traffic jam is intense. Let the worst of it dissolve over the next 60–90 minutes (have a drink, walk the paddock area if you have access). Then your driver brings you home to the villa for a swim, the team has dinner ready, and you sleep through what is by then a quiet beach evening.

Pre- and post-race days. Many MotoGP weekend guests stay 7–10 nights total — 3 days of race weekend, plus 4–7 days on either side for beach, surf, and recovery. October is our shoulder season, weather is excellent, and the beaches are calm. We design the rest of the stay around what you actually want — surf lessons, in-villa massage, day trips, or simply pool and book.

For the non-fan plus-one

Staying behind on race day.

One spouse goes to MotoGP. The other stays at the villa with a book and a cocktail by the pool. This is the most common configuration we see, and it works beautifully. Wave Lombok is far enough west of the circuit that no race noise reaches us. The beach is empty. The pool is yours. The chef can come at sunset.

For families: kids who are not into MotoGP can stay back too. We arrange surf lessons at Selong Belanak (10 min from the villa, in the opposite direction from the race traffic), or a snorkel trip from the southwest coast (boat departs from far enough west to avoid the crowds). By the time the racing crowd gets back to the villa Sunday evening, the kids have had a full beach day and are content.

Frequently asked

MotoGP weekend, answered.

How far is Wave Lombok from the Mandalika MotoGP circuit?

+

Wave Lombok is 35 minutes by car from the Mandalika International Street Circuit in normal conditions. During race weekend (Friday–Sunday), expect delays on the south-coast road each way — leave for the circuit by 8 AM if you have an early session. The villa is at Jl. Pantai Serangan, Mangkung, Praya Barat, about 21 km west of the circuit.

When is the Indonesian MotoGP held?

+

The Indonesian MotoGP is held annually at the Mandalika International Street Circuit, typically in mid-October. The 2026 race is provisionally scheduled for October. Exact dates are confirmed by Dorna (MotoGP organisation) and the Mandalika authority each year — check motogp.com for confirmed weekend dates before booking. The race weekend runs Friday practice, Saturday qualifying, Sunday race day.

Why stay at Wave Lombok during MotoGP weekend instead of in Kuta?

+

Kuta and Mandalika hotels book out 6–9 months in advance for MotoGP weekend, rates double or triple, and the area gets crowded and loud through the night. Wave Lombok offers the opposite: a beachfront villa 35 minutes west, where you return to a quiet pool and an empty beach after the noise of race day. You still attend every session — you just sleep somewhere calm. Rates do not spike for MotoGP weekend at our property because we hold inventory direct rather than yield-pricing peak events.

How early should I book Wave Lombok for MotoGP weekend?

+

Three to six months ahead. The race weekend is one of the two highest-demand windows of our year (alongside Christmas–New Year). Both villas often book out 4–6 months ahead. If you want both villas together for a group, book even earlier — that pairing is the first to go.

Can you arrange transport to and from the circuit?

+

Yes. We arrange a private car-and-driver for race weekend — typically picking you up early to beat the worst of the race-day traffic, and waiting at a nearby parking arrangement to bring you back after the chequered flag. Cost is IDR 1.2–1.8 million per day depending on car size and timing. Book at least 2 weeks ahead — drivers are fully booked closer to race weekend.

What should I bring to a MotoGP race day?

+

Sun protection (the circuit grandstands are uncovered and Lombok sun is direct), wide-brim hat, refillable water bottle (allowed inside, bring frozen), sunscreen, ear protection (engines are loud — bikes do 200+ kph), comfortable closed shoes, a small backpack, and cash for food/drinks inside (cards work but lines are long). Phone tickets and ID at the gate. Leave large bags at the villa.

Is MotoGP weekend a good time for non-fans?

+

Honestly: only if you want to be near the energy. The race itself is loud and crowded. Beaches and restaurants nearby fill up. Hotels are expensive. If you are not interested in MotoGP, the week before or the week after is the better choice — same dry-season weather, calm beaches, normal rates. If you do book the race weekend without going to the race, Wave Lombok is far enough west that the noise does not reach us — but expect heavier traffic on the south-coast road.

Can I watch MotoGP from the villa?

+

Yes. Both villas have smart TVs and reliable Wi-Fi. We can set up a streaming subscription (MotoGP VideoPass or a regional broadcaster) for guests who want to watch from the pool deck instead of going to the circuit. Some guests do the practice and qualifying days at the track and then watch race-day Sunday by the pool with a cold drink and the team grilling on the beach. It is a defensible choice.
