Selong Belanak beach surf break, South Lombok

South Lombok Surf Guide.

Seven breaks within 30 minutes of the villa, from learner waves to world-class reefs.

South Lombok is the best-kept surf secret in Indonesia. The lineups are quieter than Bali, the beach access is mostly free, and the variety of breaks means there's always somewhere working for your level.

We have an unfair advantage: the villas sit directly in front of Serangan — a right-hand reef break that most surfers haven't heard of and the locals would prefer to keep that way. Six minutes down the sand path and you're paddling out.

Frequently asked

Surfing from Wave Lombok.

Is Selong Belanak good for first-time surfers?

+

Yes. Selong Belanak is widely considered one of the best beginner waves in the world. The waves are soft, slow, and break over a sandy bottom. There are several surf schools on the beach. Group lessons run around IDR 750,000 per person for three hours including board, rashguard, and instructor.

When is the best time to surf in South Lombok?

+

The dry season — April to October — gets the strongest, most consistent swells from the Indian Ocean. November to March is the wet season; the swell is smaller and the wind is onshore for most of the south-facing breaks. Selong Belanak and Gerupuk work year-round.

Can I rent surfboards near the villa?

+

Yes. There are board rentals at Selong Belanak (10 min from the villa) and Gerupuk (30 min from the villa). We can also have boards delivered to the villa for the duration of your stay — IDR 150,000–250,000 per board per day depending on type.

How crowded are the breaks?

+

Less crowded than Bali. Selong Belanak gets busy with learners during morning and afternoon lesson windows. Mawi and Tampah can attract a small crowd on the right swell but are quiet most days. Gerupuk has the most consistent waves so it sees the most surfers.

What level of surfer is Wave Lombok suited to?

+

All levels. Beginners have the perfect learning beach 10 minutes away. Intermediates have a fun reef break a 6-minute walk down the sand. Advanced surfers are 20–30 minutes from world-class waves at Mawi, Tampah and Are Guling. We can arrange private coaching at any level.
